The Project: Glen Road

The Place: Sands Point, New York

The Conversation: Our client, a couple with a growing family needed more space. The couple loved the original mid-century house and wanted the addition to be cohesive. The decision was taken to convert the existing garage into additional living space and to build a new garage with a new master suite above that takes advantage of the view of the Long Island Sound.

The Design Story: Rather than directly attach the new garage and primary suite to the existing residence, we suggested a new free-standing structure be placed about 20 feet from the existing house and connect the two buildings with a wide hallway we called the bridge. Not having the addition completely attached to the existing building, this concept allowed the original structure to retain its light and airy character while the new structure turns slightly to optimize the view of the Long Island Sound.

The new primary suite features a dressing area of built-in closets and dressers that lead through to a bathroom with dual vanities and a free-standing tub in front of a picture window. The sleeping area has wall hung bedside table, desk and shelves flanking the bed and at the foot of the bed a cabinet that conceals a television that lowers below the floor line. There is custom colored Malm fireplace in the corner. On the bridge, there is a daybed, built into a bookcase under a big window, a cozy place to read and nap. We used a light palette of bleached walnut, natural white oak floors and pale yellow and light gray.

Kitchen cabinets, designed with simple, flush overlay doors, are rendered in a high gloss metallic laminate, appropriate to the vintage of the residence. In contrast is a whimsical, multi-colored, matte painted built-in cabinet in the dining room.

New fireplace facades in the living room and T.V. room are rendered in black granite.

The house is eclectically furnished with a mix of New England, mid-century and transitional pieces that blend into a comfortable atmosphere that truly reflects the owners’ sensibilities.
